About Us

The history of On the Record is over 35 years in the making.

SINCE 1981

On the Record has been in business since 1981. The business began when Sunny Peer, a Texas Certified Shorthand Reporter, became interested in acquiring court reporting work for federal agencies in Texas. After discussing the prospect with a Washington, D.C. firm which held contracts for such work, she decided the best way to go about this would be to train people to make clear tape recordings of these hearings in such a way that they could be easily and accurately transcribed. She formed On the Record Reporting, later to be joined in this endeavor in 1984 by Laurel Stoddard.

At the end of 2004 Ms. Peer retired from the day-to-day business of the company, and On the Record Reporting & Transcription, Inc., of which Laurel Stoddard is president, was formed solely for the purpose of carrying on the business of On the Record.

At this time we have a number of court reporters (using digital recorders primarily) working for On the Record in Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Mississippi and surrounding states. These people are responsible for making recordings and taking notes so that the transcriber is given names of speakers and other necessary information. We have AAERT-certified reporters and transcribers on staff. After the recordings are made, the audio is sent to Austin for transcription.

On the Record is a subcontractor for several Washington, D.C. firms which have contracts for federal agency work all over the U.S. In addition, On the Record itself holds a number of state contracts. We provide reporters for hearings throughout our area and occasionally go elsewhere. We sometimes cover local hearings but are not generally in competition with local court reporters. We primarily cover administrative hearings, such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the National Labor Relations Board. We also cover meetings and public hearings for various state agencies in Texas. Deadlines for delivery of transcripts vary from overnight to 30 days.
